Those black streaks on your roof you thought were dirt or rain that just hadn't quite dried off yet (we do live in the Pacific NorthWest after all), isn't actually dirt at all. Your asphalt roof shingle has black algae living on it and it really likes its living conditions so it's not going anywhere soon. Black algae, or Gloeocapsa Magma, thrives in wet climates and it feeds on the limestone filler which is now found in most modern roof shingles. This black algae holds moisture within the roof shingle which causes premature aging, rotting and granule loss (the granules can often be found in the gutters mistaken for sandy dirt). The algae tends to spread during rainfalls causing black streaks to show up on sidewalks, pool decks and even on the exterior walls of your home. It can also transfer from house to house, leading to unwelcome neighbourly conversations about your rampant traveling algae instead of the usual, "Nice weather today, eh?"
The two other culprits we have camping on our roofs in the Lower Mainland are lichen and the dreaded moss. Lichen is greyish white and also thrives up here on our roofs. And if you have a north facing roof close to trees, we are guessing you also have some moss growing up there as well.
